Daniel Patrick O'Connell Collection - The Jellyfish Patrol

Daniel Patrick O'Connell was a Scout in the Troop during the 1960s.  In December, he sent us some of his memorabilia from that time.

One of the items that he sent us was a was a Jellyfish Patrol Flag and a Jellyfish Patrol Patch.

According to Mr. O'Connell:

The Jellyfish Patrol (named for the marine creatures that would blossom off Camp Roosevelt in late June) was the staff patrol – SPL, ASPL, JASM.  The troop had 60+ boys in those days, and I think the staff patrol was used to graduate older boys out of Patrol Leader so that younger boys could assume leadership positions.

Before I became SPL, I was PL for Panther Patrol, which was clearly the best patrol.  I was recruited for scouts by Jack McGinn, a neighbor who was Panther Patrol Leader and later an Eagle Scout.  Sadly, he died in the Vietnam War – he was a great guy.

What a great item from that time!  You don't see things like this anymore.

And, just as important, we sadly have learned from his note that a second Scout from Troop 466 was killed in Vietnam: Jack McGinn.  We will remember him and "Trippy" Streeks on Memorial Day 2022.

Daniel Patrick O'Connell Collection - Panther Patrol Flag

Daniel Patrick O'Connell was a member of Troop 466 during the 1960's.   In fact, he was able to identify himself and others, in the videos from the Creeden Collection.

In late December, he sent us some of his memorabilia.  One of the greatest pieces was the Panther Patrol Flag, which he tells me that was created by his mother for his patrol.

What a fantastic item!  I must say, you don't see Patrol Flags like this today.

Daniel Patrick O'Connell - Patches (Part Two)

Daniel Patrick O'Connell was Scout during 1960's.  In fact, he is in a number of the videos from the Creeden Collection and was able to identify a number of Scouts from that period of time, and did so in the comments section of each.

He was kind enough to donate a number of items to the troop, including the following patches.

Thank you!

Chicken Tortilla Dinner in a Dutch Oven.

Notice how everyone gave it a BIG THUMBS UP, except for that strange Scout in the center. By the way, who is he?

And, the Scouts made a new friend later on that evening.
No, he did not end up in next morning's breakfast.

LEAVE NO TRACE "TRAIN THE TRAINER" COURSE FOR SCOUTERS in Montgomery County

The Leave No Trace (LNT) Train the Trainer course is a weekend 16 hour outdoor course designed for Scouters, educators, youth leaders, etc. who value the outdoors and want to teach others how to protect, preserve, and responsibly use it. The course will be directed by LNT Master Educator Rob Heider, a Montgomery District Scouter and veteran BSA High Adventure adviser, along with four Train the Trainer qualified Montgomery District Scouters. The class will cover topics like: a brief history of wilderness and public land protection, review of LNT principles, teaching techniques and learning styles, all with an emphasis on Scouting and LNT. There will be discussion regarding why LNT is important in the Scouting program, and how LNT has been incorporated into the new 2010 Rank Requirements.

The course is not an official Scouting activity, but this specific course is designed to actively assist Scouters to teach others, both inside and outside of Scouting, how to responsibly enjoy the outdoors using Leave No Trace principles and ethics.

Each registered student will receive information via e-mail to prepare for the course, and will conclude the course with an action plan to teach LNT in the Scouting community. A maximum of 14 students will be accepted. Adult Scouters with high adventure experience from Montgomery District will receive first preference. Course graduates receive a certificate from the Leave No Trace Center for Ethics and will be qualified to teach LNT principles to Scouts, Scouters, and other interested groups.

Course details and registration instructions will be posted via the Montgomery Newsflash soon. Please direct questions to Rob Heider at rlheider@yahoo.com, beginning on Sunday, August 29, 2010.
