Eagle Scout Project Follow-Up

Recently, one of our leaders went to Congressional Cemetery to look around.  Of course, he had to follow-up on the Eagle Scout project conducted by Matt J.   

It looks like the Cemetery staff have done some landscaping work around the vaults, and have painted them.

After the vaults were cleaned of dirt, they were hosed down as best as we could.

Here you see the vaults, which were cleaned off.

Of course, where would an Eagle Project be without the mom's ensuring that we are well fed and hydrated.

Here are two of the leaders prepping one of the vaults.  Notice how the photographer has managed to get the better side of one of the leaders.

 

Removing the dirt was an extremely hard job, as it had not rained in over a week.  So, the soil was rock hard.   Only later did we get water to soften the soil a bit.

Eagle Scout Project - Matt J. (Part 1)

We may be a small troop, but we do have at least one Scout each year, complete a project and earn the rank of Eagle.  No, we are not an "Eagle Factory" but simply have some great Scouts and Leaders.

The latest project, and there is another coming up in August, was at Congressional Cemetery. According to the website, 

Congressional Cemetery is a 35 acre historic yet active burial ground located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Initially known as the Washington Parish Burial Ground, Congressional became the first truly national burial ground as Congress bought sites, buried noted civil servants, and funded the infrastructure.

Among the 67,000 burials at Congressional are scores of noteworthy citizens who left their mark on the city and the nation.

Matt J's project has two basic objectives, regarding two vaults:

1.  Paint the inside of one of the vaults, using a lime based paint
2.  Remove the soil off the top of two vaults, to attempt to restore them to their original look.

Eagle Scout Project - A Wider Circle (Part 3)

This project was completed in one day but watering of the plants was required for at least one week.

As the day progressed, you can see that we were able to keep some of the plants and bushes.  Simply weeding gave the area a whole new look!

We not only weeded, but removed all of the dirt from the edge of he garden and on he parking lot.  Most of it was filled with oil and other vehicle fluids. 

You can see the large number of lawn debris bags.   I guess there were about 20 bags debris removed.

Eagle Scout Project at A Wider Circle (Part 1)

Our first Eagle Scout Project of the year, consisted of reworking the grassy area by the parking lot/retaining wall at A Wider Circle.     It had become overgrown.  The objective was to have the area look neat, clean and professional, as their clients would go into the business area.

We started at apx. 9am slowly cleaning out the weeds which had overtaken the area. 

Landscaping had been done a long time ago, as were pulling these large stones from under the bushes and weeds.

Colin B's Eagle Scout Project (Part Two)

Colin B's Eagle Scout Project (Part One)

This is a very good year for the troop, as we have now completed two Eagle Scout projects!  

This second project took place on August 20th at The Therapeutic & Recreational Riding Center in Glenwood, MD.   The Center provides physical and occupational therapy services to children and adults with a wide range of physical, mental and emotional disabilities.  For more information about them, go to:  http://www.trrcmd.org

The  project focused on an area which contains a pond and a variety of aromatic bushes which needed some major clean-up and improvements.  The project consisted of a number of items, just to name a few:

• Draining and cleaning the pond.  Replacing the pump in the pond.
• Weeding and mulching the path.
• Removal of a large bush.
• Trimming the existing rose and other bushes.
• Planting new rose and other bushes.
• Painting the mailboxes and street sign

The project was completed in one day!
